Born in India, Dr. C. Kumar Patel is one of the world's most distinguished optical scientists, with a track record of outstanding accomplishments in the fields of technological invention and business as well.
Trained as a physicist, he worked for over thirty years at AT&T Bell Labs, where he discovered laser action in carbon dioxide. This discovery led him to invent the carbon dioxide laser, used today in surgery as well as for welding, cutting and drilling materials ranging from steel and titanium to cigarette filters to living cell tissue.
Today Dr. Patel is the CEO and chairman of Pranalytica, a company producing revolutionary, ultra-sensitive instrumentation for non-invasive, real-time and cost-effective diagnosis of physiological functions and the monitoring of ambient air in semiconductor device processing.

An autonomous mind of amazing creative power, Kumar Patel has been issued 38 US patents for lasers and their applications, as well as for automotive and aircraft safety. He is professor of physics at UCLA, whose scientific programmes he helped to improve significantly during his tenure as vice-chancellor of research. Thanks to his many outstanding accomplishments, he is a member of the National Academy of Science and the National Academy of Engineering, and an Honorary Member of various professional societies. In 1996 he received the coveted National Medal of Science from the President of the United States of America.
Dr. Patel is a true leader, fully aware of his social obligations. He has generously donated substantial amounts of money for improving the dialogue between India and the USA, both nuclear powers. |
